Richard Leakey explains his position on the recent report on elephant management in South Africa that culling is about to be re-introduced. I was a little surprised that he says that he would like to " see the management authority ensure that entire families or bond groups are removed intact to eliminate or minimize the emotional trauma to remaining individuals " I guess because elephants mourn the loss of other elephants, it would be less traumatizing on the remaining elephants but it's sad that an entire elephant family could be wiped out. Let's hope that it doesn't ever have to come to this and they exhaust every other possibility. I watched a show where they did relocate elephants but even though they were brought hundreds of miles away, a lot of the elephants found their way back.
